Jul 5, 2011 BRITAIN POPULAR WITH TOURISTS THIS YEAR
Britain has become a hotspot for overseas tourists this year, with many taking advantage of UK car hire and heading to the nation's most well-known spots.
According to Mail Online, research has shown that Britain is now a "desirable option" for overseas residents; ranking as the fifth-most popular holiday spot for European travellers.
Reasons for this have included the "considerable value" Britain offers as a holiday destination; as well as the exchange rate between sterling and Euros. The rate is strong for those who typically pay in Euros, who can get approximately 0.89 pounds for each Euro they exchange.
In addition, The Telegraph cited the UK's "rich, historic buildings and monuments" as a key draw. It also attributed the rise in popularity to Britain's "vibrant city life", which has proven to be a particular draw with the French, who visit Britain the most out of all our European counterparts.
The Telegraph went on to confirm: "London remains the key attraction for overseas visitors, with more than 14.6 million spending time in the capital last year and spending over £8.6 billion.
"Outside of London, Edinburgh Castle is the most popular tourist destination for overseas visitors, attracting more than 1.2 million each year."
It said that the majority of tourists visiting these sports are German, American and France - with these nationalities making up one in three visitors.
